It is with great sorrow that the family of Emmett C. Darity Jr., 88, announces his peaceful passing at his home on Sunday, February 18th, 2024. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2024, at 1:00p.m. at Macon Memorial Park in Macon and to be followed by the funeral service and celebration of his entrance into Heaven at 2:00 p.m. Glen Talbert will officiate, and graveside will be private.
Emmett was born in Macon, Georgia on November 27th, 1935. After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, he returned to Macon where he met and married his best friend and soulmate, Betty Jane. The two were inseparable from the moment they met until the day Betty entered Heaven in 2018, and he never stopped professing his love for her. His very last word was her name. Emmett had a few rules for life: two of them being work hard and play hard. He loved to hunt and fish and seriously had it down to science. He was once featured in Georgia Outdoor News magazine for a deer he shot in Monroe County that had a 10-point antler span of 24 inches. He also had many fishing trophies he could brag about, but his favorite thing about those fish was eating them. Early in Emmett’s work career, he began his days at Armstrong Cork Company packing tiles. He usually ended those days in the backyard working on Volkswagen Bugs. He was so skilled and well-known for his work on those cars that the local Volkswagen dealership often consulted him. In the late 70s, Emmett began working at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, where he quickly worked his way up into management. His reputation among the employees at B&W was that Emmett was well-respected, quick-witted and always fair. As a matter of fact, his retirement party in 1993 was one of the biggest anyone had ever seen at the company. After he retired, Emmett was always running into people with whom he had worked, and while he may not have remembered their names, he could almost always recite their employee ID number. He and Betty truly lived life to the fullest after his retirement, traveling all over the world and claiming St. Augustine, Florida as their second home. They also loved to dabble in antiques and, for a hobby, set up booths in several antique malls. There was never a man more dedicated to his wife than Emmett. During Betty’s illness in the year before her death, he never left her side. He loved serving his Lord in many churches where he also served as a Deacon.
Other than his parents and his wife, Betty Jane Darity, Emmett is preceded in death by his great-grandson, Matthew Horne. Emmett will be lovingly remembered by so many including his daughters, Cindy Darity of Catawba, North Carolina, Terri Darity Mitchell of Warner Robins, and Tonya Darity Butler (Matt) of Gray. He will also be warmly and happily remembered by his nine grandchildren, Kristin (Neal) Meier, Kaleigh (Andrew) Reinhardt, Kelly Davis, Shea Powell, Victor Horne and Stephen Seth Mitchell, Gabrielle (Devin) Sharpe, Helaina Griggers and Marlowe Butler. He also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-greats. Others who will remember and miss him include aunts, uncles, and cousins from the Irish Darity Clan, as well as his caregivers, Vicki, Bernice, Kisha, and Janice.
Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Emmett to Lizella Baptist Church, 2950 S Lizella Rd, Lizella, GA 31052.
