James — known to many as “Crisco” — graduated from Mark Smith High School on June 3, 1967. He proudly served his country as a Communication Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy from September 20, 1967 until May 21, 1973, including service during the Vietnam War and later duty on the USS Tutuila in Guam. Following his military service, he worked as an electrician at J.M. Huber Kaolin Mine for 34 years (1973–2007) where his loyal dedication and tireless work ethics were well known.
A devoted man of faith, James was a charter member of Central Fellowship Church (formed from Grace Baptist and Cochran Field Church in June 1979) and served the congregation for 46 years. He served on the church school board, maintained the school buses, ran sound for services and events, and was always ready to help those in need. Family and faith were his guiding priorities. He read his Bible daily and led family devotionals with his late wife, Vickie E. Flynn.
James loved collecting lapel pins — especially his treasured Waffle House pins collected over 31 years — and had a fondness for eagle memorabilia. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed westerns, especially Wagon Train. Known for his generosity, steadfastness, and respect for the American flag. He rarely missed his son’s or grandchildren’s sporting events and kept stat books at every game he attended.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie E. Flynn and sister, Randy Turner. Survivors include his son, James Brice Flynn and his partner Lori Smith; grandchildren, Zachary Flynn (“Tater Bug”) wife Natalee Flynn, Hunter Flynn (“Tadpole”) wife Haley Flynn, Eli Flynn (“Terrapin”), and Haylie Flynn (“Tinkerbell”); great-grandchildren, Paisleigh (Tornado), Everett James Flynn-EJ (“Teddy Bear”); sisters, Patsy Schlau husband Greg, and Koneta Hirst; sister-in-laws, Gerry Watts, Sarah Mayson, Charlotte Etheridge; and nieces and nephews.
