Bill was born in Milledgeville, Georgia to the late James W. Marsh, Sr. and Sibyl Lanier Marsh. Some of the happiest moments of his childhood were spent with family in Toombs County, Georgia, especially his granddaddy, Hezekiah K. Lanier, Sr.
Bill graduated from Lanier High School in 1952. It was at a Lanier High School football game in 1949 that Bill met the love of his life, a young teenager named Monica Crutchfield. They married in 1954 and shared 66 years together as husband and wife before her passing in 2021. Shortly after their marriage, Airman Bill Marsh departed to his new duty station at Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico. Monica joined him soon after and in 1956 their first son, James W. Marsh III, was born.
During his military service, which included the Korean War, Bill served as a gunner on a select bomber crew. He flew on B-29 and B-36 aircraft. After four years in the Air Force, Bill returned to middle Georgia and continued federal service, working as a computer programmer at Robins Air Force Base until his retirement. During this time he earned an associate's degree from the University of Georgia and a BBA from Georgia College. Bill and Monica raised a family and shared many wonderful adventures. Together they enjoyed fishing, traveling and being together. Bill was also an avid gardener. They were members of Mikado Baptist Church, Macon.
Bill leaves a legacy in his three children, James William "Bill" Marsh, III (Deborah), Michael Alan Marsh (Regina) and Wade Bartlett "Bart" Marsh (Jennifer). His legacy continues with 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Marsh (Betty) of Madison, MS and Ken Marsh (Bonnie) of Warner Robins, GA.
