Johnny Goss, Husband, Father, Pap (Grandfather), Big Brother, Uncle Johnny, Johnny Frank, Coach Goss, Builder and Believer in Jesus Christ, has been reunited with family and friends in Heaven’s version of a Family Reunion. Johnny lived an amazing life and he loved sharing it with so many. His early professional career began as a letter carrier and mail handler for the United States Post Office. He gained the confidence and the support of his co-workers by being elected as the President of the local Letter Carriers Union and represented his constituents with a fierce determination and an unshakeable resolve. He then transitioned into private business and began a lengthy career as a builder of homes, a developer of subdivisions and multifamily apartments and finally, large commercial complexes from New York to California. Two of his proudest professional experiences included the times where he was the Project Superintendent for the construction of The Oxford Exchange, a large commercial development in Oxford, Alabama and his work in Atlanta as a member of the construction management team that built Atlantic Station. He loved the building profession.
Johnny’s life away from work was full of enjoyment as well. He coached in the Macon Midget Football Association (Falcons and Cowboys) and was a mentor to several college and professional athletes as they were young men. Later in life he coached an AAU Basketball team based in Macon and led that team to a TOP 5 National Finish for the 17 and under age group. Players from that team eventually signed with the University of Kentucky, the University of Georgia, the University of Pittsburgh and Ft. Valley State University. Not only did Johnny build strong young men mentally and physically, he volunteered his time and skills to “Builders for Christ” in order to help build and plant new churches all over the eastern United States. He also volunteered in construction projects with Camp Grace, an organization bringing inner city youth to Christian camps designed to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to these usually unchurched young men and women.
He was so very proud to be a member of the first graduating class of Willingham High School in 1960. Johnny was a member of the Willingham football and basketball teams and cherished those memories with his classmates for a lifetime. He leaves behind a loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Jane Burnham Goss, four children, Henry (Stacey) Goss of Macon, Holly Goss Hutto (Alan) of Ft. Mill, South Carolina, Jonathan (Amy) Goss of Birmingham, Alabama and Jason (Regalia) Goss of Rapid City, South Dakota, currently serving in the United States Air Force. He leaves two beautiful granddaughters, Chloe Anne Goss and Marissa Gabrielle Goss of Macon. Devoted brothers and sisters are Lola Goss Williams (Kenny) of Macon, Vernon Thelston Goss, Jr. (JoAnn) of Warner Robins, Thomas Oscar Goss, Sr. of Macon, Gwen Goss Arrington (Henry) of Macon, David Henry Goss of Byron and Jenice Goss King of Macon. The remaining members of Johnny’s family are expansive, numbering over 100 souls as cousins, nieces, nephews and in laws! Sunday school classes at Mabel White Baptist Church and Ingleside Baptist Church (Journey) were a vital part of Johnny’s life.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. A Celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Ingleside Baptist Church. Entombment following at Macon Memorial Park Mausoleum. Officiating the service will be Reverend Joe McDaniel and Reverend Mark Hudgins. The sons, son-in-law and nephews of Johnny Frank Goss will serve as Escorts and Pall Bearers for this celebration of his life.
