Mittie Glass Bailey went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2014 after a brief illness. Born in Macon in 1926, Mittie was a lifelong resident of Macon and a longstanding, active member of Cherokee Heights Baptist Church and its successor, New Heights. Mittie was a career employee at Sears. In her calling as a mother and homemaker, she invested in instilling in her children the values of hard work, education, perseverance, and respect for others. After successfully raising her children and retiring from Sears, Mittie spent many years as a caregiver to her family members. Mittie often opened her home to those in need, and was known in her Hillcrest Heights neighborhood for her generosity. In her later years, she was known for her happy smile, wit, and quickness to compliment others, creating deposits of kindness with many people along her path.
Preceded in death by her husband (Albert E. “Gene” Bailey), Mittie is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Mittie will be interred in Memorial Park, next to her husband in the veterans section. The family extends sincere gratitude to Southern Heritage Personal Care Home and Chad Cavender for their assistance and care during the past year.
A Celebration of her Life will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday graveside in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with visitation from 5 until 7 PM Saturday at the funeral home. Mike Cochran will officiate. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to The Gray Haven Project, PO Box 172 Richmond, VA 23218 or the donor’s favorite charity.
