Myrtice Howard Tidwell passed away on August 5 at the Fountainview Center for Alzheimer’s Disease in DeKalb County, Georgia. Myrtice was born September 2, 1927, in Emanuel County, Georgia, the fourth of Hattie Lee Lamb Howard and William Jason Howard’s eleven children. She recalled her childhood in Emanuel County as a “very good and happy one, living on the farm and growing up with my ten brothers and sisters.” One of her most memorable childhood experiences was preparing food for German prisoners of war during WWII, who were housed in a camp near Swainsboro.
Myrtice married Wallace Herman Hudson from Emanuel County with whom she had four children. The family moved to Macon in 1951. Following her divorce, Myrtice began work as an operating room technician. In 1961 she married a widower, Charles Bartow Grace, Jr., and became mother to his two sons. In retirement, Myrtice provided in-home care for elderly women. She also enjoyed traveling, including an extended trip to Germany, France, and Spain with her friends Sonja and Larry Rowe.
Following Charlie’s death, Myrtice married James Moye Tidwell. The two eventually moved full-time to Lake Sinclair where she resided until the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. Two of her proudest accomplishments were to be the Senior Regent of the Women of the Moose #483 in Macon and president of the Macon chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. Her friends and family recall her warmth, her unconditional affection, and her perseverance as exemplified by her favorite saying “Where there is a will, there’s a way.”
Myrtice is predeceased by her eldest son Eric Hudson and grandson Nicky Grace. She is survived by husband James Tidwell; her children Wallace Quinn Hudson (Millie), Sandra Hudson Darby (Sanford), and Herman Wallace Hudson; her stepsons Charles B. Grace III (Margie) and Donald Ray Grace; and seven grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held at the Macon Memorial Park Chapel on Saturday, August 11, at 12 noon with the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.. Donations can be made to Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center, East, Suite 550, Atlanta, Georgia 30346. The concluding comment in her memoir sums up her life: “Who would have thought a little girl, who was raised up on a farm in Emanuel County in Swainsboro, Georgia, would get to travel and see what I’ve seen and enjoyed.”
