Ruby Irene Hatcher Jacobs was born August 5, 1945 in Hawkinsville, GA, to Edmund Chesterfield Hatcher and Evelyn Rebecca Burris Hatcher and passed away September 4, 2022. She lived in Macon, GA, most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents; paternal grandparents, William Jeff Davis Hatcher and Laura Elizabeth Wade Hatcher; maternal grandparents, Tullie Columbus Burris and Florine Blondell Johnson Burris; sisters, Betty Louise Hatcher McCowen Thomas, Peggy Ann Hatcher Parker, Lucy Bell Hatcher Ricks; brothers, Edmund Chesterfield Hatcher, Jr. and Tullie Jeff Hatcher; and granddaughters, Ashley Lauren Jacobs, Angel Howard, and Hope Howard.
Survivors include: husband of 58 years, Hugh Carlton Jacobs; daughters, Faith Denise Jacobs Cubas Peck, Twiggs County, GA, Brenda Faye Jacobs Howard (Richard), St. Mary’s, GA; sons, Hugh Carlton Jacobs, Jr. (Cindy), Jupiter, FL, William Joe Jacobs (Jennie), High Springs, FL, Benjamin Lee Jacobs (Patty), Jones County, GA; sisters, Mary Evelyn Hatcher Barlow (Frank), Macon, GA, Dorothy Elizabeth Hatcher Allen, Abilene, TX, Cora Idell Hatcher Flemister (Jim), Lynn Haven, FL; Sisters-in Law, Barbara Hatcher, Macon, GA and Barbara Jacobs Bedgood, Kentucky; 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
Ruby attended Union Elementary, Agnes Barden Elementary, John W. Burke Elementary, and Dudley Hughes High School, all in Macon, GA, and Twiggs County High School, in Jeffersonville, GA.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions over the years, including teacher, coach, and music leader.
She was a volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America for more than 45 years and served in many positions at the unit, district, council, region, and national level, including, Den Leader, Cubmaster, 11-year-old scout leader, troop advancement chairman, merit badge counselor, and National Day Camp School trainer.
She was employed by Maxon Electronics during the Vietnam War making parts for ammunition, Newberry’s Department Store, McCrory’s Department Store, Medical Center of Central GA as a nurse assistant, Robins Air Force Base hospital clinic as appointment clerk, Boy Scouts of America as Scout Shop Manager, and Cherokee National Life Insurance Co. as a claims clerk.
Ruby received many awards including Employee of the Year at RAFB, and while involved in Scouting, she was Scouter of the Year twice, and received the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver Award, Religious Emblem, Whitney M. Young Award, and Silver Porcupine Award. She trained many other Scout leaders in Basic Training, Wood Badge Training, and Commissioner College. She also graduated from Commissioner College with a degree in Commissioner Science. Of all the things she did as a Scout leader, she most enjoyed working directly with the Scouts.
Visitation will be at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home, 3969 Mercer University Dr, Macon, GA, Friday, September 9, from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Funeral services will be conducted at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1624 Williamson Rd., Macon, GA, Saturday, September 10, at 2 pm.
Graveside service and burial at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery, will be immediately following the funeral.
