

John Thomas (Tom) Mathews died unexpectedly of a heart attack on October 15, 2016. He had been recuperating from a leg amputation at the Miona Center in Ideal, GA. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 3:30PM, in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. Family will greet friends for the hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
Tom was born October 26, 1954, to Elaine and Bill Mathews in Bibb County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Christine Pope, his parents, and his oldest brother, Bill Mathews, Jr. He is survived by his son, Thomas Andrew “Andy” Mathews; Christie Philpott Swain (Richie) in Warner Robins, Joshua Pilpott (Adrianne) in Newnan, and his brother, Dick Mathews (Deborah). Grandchildren are: Natalie Marie Mathews, Rachael Elaine Mathews, and Carter Drew Mathews; Taylor Swain, Tyler Swain, Tanner Swain; Brody Philpott, and Macie Philpott. Nieces and Nephews are: Missy Mathews Cumbie (Mike), Dottie Mathews McCallum (Brad), Mitch Mathews (Tina) in Fredericksburg, VA; Chris Mathews (Emily) in Lyon, France; and Katie Mathews Loyd (Mack) in Athens, GA.
Mr. Mathews graduated from Central High School where he participated in ROTC. He was a lifelong baseball and softball player. As a young man, he attended Hillcrest Methodist and played for them in the Church Softball League. Tom worked as a landscape contractor for Dick Mathews’ Landscape Center and later, Moore and Murphy Property Developers.
