

He was born and raised in Jersey City before his family moved to Keansburg where he met his high school sweetheart and life partner, Annette. James spent four years in the United States Coast Guard where he was stationed in Greenland on a Westwind 281 Icebreaker. His long career at JCPL / GPU was capped off running the motor pool at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station. He was an avid fisherman, crabber, clammer, and jokester. Surrounded by lifelong friends, James was famously friendly and social.
He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years Annette, mother Mary Maddalena, and his brother Joe and sister-in-law Beryl.
James is survived by his children James Maddalena Jr. and wife Cynthia, Mark Maddalena and wife Ilene, and Suzan Katzer and husband Paul, grandchildren Paul Jr., James, Carson, Georgia, Adam, Matthew, Nathaniel, and Samuel, and great grandchildren Mason, Waylon, and David.
Visitation will be held on Friday May 15th, 2026 at Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home in Manahawkin, NJ from 10am to 12pm. Mass will follow at 1:00pm at St Mary of the Pines Church in Manahawkin, NJ. Interment for James and Annette at the Brigadier William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery will be privately held at a later date.
