A. Nora Howes
July 13, 1917 – September 30, 2018
Lt. Col. A. Nora Howes, 101, of Brick, NJ, passed away to her Lord on September 30, 2018 at home. Nora was born in England. When she was 5, her family left England and she remembers vividly going through the immigration process at Ellis Island. Her father reminded her often of how much they owed America for their life and freedom here. It was that gratitude that motivated Nora to serve her country during the war.
Raised in Neptune City, she joined the United States Army in 1942 and served proudly for 28 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Nora was the recipient of the Legion of Merit Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps Medal, and Service Medals for serving during the Korean & Vietnam Wars as well as in the Far East, Japan, Okinawa, Guam, Korea and Germany. She dearly loved the Army and proudly shared her many stories with her family. A favorite memory was when Nora led 250 women in the Presidential Parade during the Kennedy inauguration.
Lt. Col. Howes retired, reluctantly, and settle in Santa Rosa, CA where she lived for 37 years. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Sonoma State University and graduated Cum Laude in 1979. She went on to work towards her Master’s Degree in history. During her years in California, she was an avid golfer, student, gardener and faithful parishioner of Christ Church.
Deciding she wanted to spend more time with her family in New Jersey, Nora “came home” 12 years ago and settled in Brick, NJ. She continued to play golf, grew to love her new church family at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Bay Head, and for the first time, experienced the joy and chaos of being a beloved member of a very large family.
Nora was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Alice Howes; her brother and sister, Charles Howes and Marjorie Howes; her dear niece, Meg Howes Richardson; and her dearest friend, Hazel Snowden.
She is survived by her niece, Ellen Howes Berardi and her husband Richard; her 6 great nieces and nephews, McKay Berardi Miller and her husband Scott, Christopher Richardson and his wife Sonia, Richard Berardi and his wife Nicole, Jennifer Richardson Fryberger and her husband Kevin, Courtney Richardson Tyron and her husband Bill, and Jason Berardi and his wife Suzanne; and 10 great-great nieces and nephews, Kayla and Mya Miller, Ciara Berardi, Kylie and Weston Fryberger, Eva and Ali Tryon and Leah, Jack and Shane Berardi.
