

Betty Ann Gatchell, 88, of Marblehead, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, surrounded by family. She was the beloved wife of Benjamin Arthur Gatchell III, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage.
Born at Mary Alley Hospital in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Betty was the daughter of the late Robert and Irene Hamson. A devoted homemaker and lifelong resident of Marblehead, Betty found joy in the simple pleasures of life—painting the serene landscapes of her hometown, baking delicious treats for loved ones, doing crossword puzzles, reading novels, spending days at the beach, and above all cherished the time spent with her family and friends.
Betty was the loving mother of four children; Benjamin Gatchell IV and his wife Wendy of Lebanon, Maine, Beth O'Connor of Del Valle, Texas; her husband, the late Edward O'Connor, Douglas Gatchell of Marblehead, Joshua Gatchell and his wife Heather Gatchell, also of Marblehead.
Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Noel and her husband Eric St. Hilaire, Johanna Apostoloff, George O'Connor, James O'Connor, Lily Gatchell, Benjamin Gatchell, and Gavin Kamps. She was also blessed with a great-granddaughter, Summer St. Hilaire.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Irene Hamson; her brother, Robert Hamson; her sister, Debbie Elliott; and her nephew, Christopher Elliott.
She leaves behind her sister, Cindy Henry; her sister-in-law, Celia Gatchell; her nieces, Sarah Elliott Tierney, Diane Cookson, and Joanna McBride; her nephew, Robert Elliott; as well as her great-nieces and great-nephews.
Betty was blessed with many dear friends, including one of her closest, Jan Gallagher, with whom she shared a friendship spanning nearly eight decades. She also cherished her friends from Anderson Street, whose companionship she deeply valued and always looked forward to. In her later years, Betty was lovingly cared for by Joanna Bergeron, whose kindness and companionship meant the world to her.
Betty will be remembered for her warmth, creativity, and unwavering love for her family. Her gentle spirit and artistic soul touched all who knew her, and her memory will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
Visiting Hours will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m at Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street. Betty's Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home Burial will follow at Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
