

Carolyn E. (Sweet) Samolchuk, age 96 years, of Marblehead, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael Samolchuk with whom she shared more than 50 years of marriage. Born in South Paris, Maine, to the late Carroll and Maude (Martin) Sweet, Carolyn’s family moved to Marblehead when she was three years old and she lived in town for the rest of her life. She was a graduate of Marblehead High School.
Following her marriage to Michael in 1941, Carolyn devoted her time to raising her three children. Once her children were older she worked at CranBarry. Carolyn was also an active member of St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and knit sweaters for the fair, among many other activities. In her retirement, Carolyn served on the board of the local AARP, was involved with the Marblehead Council on Aging, and volunteered at the Marblehead Police Department Museum. She also enjoyed being a scout leader, traveling, knitting, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mother of the late Alan Samolchuk and his surviving wife Linda (Chimenti) of Browns Mills, New Jersey, Paul and Madeline (Brett) Samolchuk of Bartlett, New Hampshire and Mary (Samolchuk) and Nicholas Economou of Marblehead. Grandmother to Terri (Chimenti) Matthews and her husband, John Greenfield, Mark Samolchuk and his wife, Megan (Champ), the late Ranae Samolchuk, the late Cameron Brett, Katrina (Economou) Sadowski and her husband, Daniel, and Christina Economou. Great-grandmother to Brian, Megan, Jennifer, Joshua, Gabriel, Chloe, Nora, and Andrew. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Donald and Samuel. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. Carolyn will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church, 67 Cornell Road, Marblehead on Saturday, January 16 at 10:30AM. Burial to follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Visiting hours will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead on Friday, January 15 from 4 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church, 67 Cornell Road, Marblehead, MA, 01945 or to the Friends of the Marblehead Council on Aging, 10 Humphrey Street, Marblehead, MA, 01945.
