OBITUARY

Douglas Patrick Marino

June 26, 2003April 24, 2020

Douglas Patrick Marino of Marblehead, MA died peacefully on April 24, 2020 after a long hard fight in the Pediatric ICU at Boston Children’s Hospital. Doug was born on June 26, 2003 to Donald and Kathleen Marino of Marblehead, MA. Douglas was the youngest of three wonderful sons. He was an incredibly special boy who overcame many obstacles on a day to day basis. He was loved by many and made nothing but a positive impact on people wherever he went. There is not one person in this world who wouldn’t agree that Douglas was the sweetest, kindest and most content young man. He tried his hardest at any task and he showed all of us that he was the toughest and strongest person we know.

He went to three different schools during his life on earth, the Children’s Center of Communication in Beverly where he has an adaptive baseball field named after him “The Douglas Marino Community Baseball Field”, Higashi School and Crystal Springs School. There is not a student, teacher, friend or relative that would not agree he was the best!

He was and is truly an angel that our family was blessed with for 16 years. Douglas has donated his organs and tissues which have already saved multiple lives. We believe wholeheartedly that Douglas entered heavens gates and said proudly “Here I am Grampie!” and his biggest fan turned to him with open arms to greet him. No longer non-verbal, no longer handicapped, Douglas is doing everything and anything he wants with ease. The list of people that miss him is endless.

He is survived by his parents Donald and Kathleen, his brothers Daniel and Derek, his maternal grandmother Patricia McCarthy and his paternal grandparents Louis and Carol Marino. He was predeceased by his loving grandfather John McCarthy. He is also loved and missed by his Uncle John and Aunt Dawn McCarthy, Aunt Kathie Berube, Uncle John and Aunt Barbara Marino, Uncle Michael Marino, cousins Kristopher, Jennifer, Anthony, Katie, Jack, Colleen and Lindsey.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Boston Children's Pediatric ICU for the exceptional care Douglas received. They are our heroes as well. We love you Douglas.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Doug was in my classroom at BSD/CCC and he was one of a kind. Always having fun while simultaneously working hard to learn and build up his skill base, he was so amazing just to watch. Silly, snuggly, and a friend to everyone, every time I hear the song I used to sing to him “Visit The Moon” I’ll always think of him, in fact, he’d be impossible to forget. My love and support to you, his amazing family, for you also were one of a kind and you often inspired his educators to keep going on our hardest of days. Please know you are so loved and prayed for now and always. Xoxo Samantha

My prayers to his family. I met Doug only for a short period when I was his educator. He was a brilliant young man that will be missed.

Doug loved my lessons. He was very attentive in my class as if he did not want to miss anything I said. I felt like a superstar being cheered by a zealous fan. He would often bolt from his classroom to see me if he hears me teaching in a different classroom.

The P.E. teacher would teach him how to use a pogo stick while wearing a huge picture of my face over her head. She said he paid attention better that way. Per her request, I ended up on the stage of the P.E performance of that year’s Annual Celebration. He was physically challenged, but he learned to jump just a few seconds. How exhilarating!!

When I heard about the sad news, I watched his pogo stick performance numerous times and the video from that year’s Annual Celebration that captured him looking excited in my lesson. The same P.E teacher sent me a few very precious pictures of him with me on the stage. I will cherish those, too.

As a teacher who valued him, as just one person whom he meant so much to, I just want to say thank you for being part of my life. I am lucky to have known him.

He is now free from limitations. I hope he is surrounded by letters and print. I hope he reads a lot up there. That is what he loved.

Kathy, Donnie, Dan, Derek, Pat and all of Douglas' family,

We are heartbroken at the loss of Dougie. He was such a sweet soul who will always hold a special place in my heart. I have no doubt that he and his Grampie are having many conversations while tossing a football together. Love to you all.
