Edna Louise (Porter) Stanley, also known as “Jackie”, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, January 30, 2015. Born May 6, 1915 in Lubec, Maine; Daughter of the late Rosina and Edward Porter; Wife of the late John M. Stanley, U.S. Navy Retired.
Born and raised by her mother, father, and grandmother on a Maine farm with her sisters, brothers, and grandmother, Jackie loved school, basketball, winter sledding, riding horses, the farm animals, and eating her grandmother’s homemade breads, butter, jams, canned fruit, canned vegetables, ice cream, cakes, pies, roasts, and farm breakfasts.
She marveled at her father’s success in treating various ills with his folk medicine remedies. At age 18 she married, had a child, Marie, became a nurse, and traveled the country with her husband, John, while he served the U.S.A. in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
She loved entertainment, movies, television, radio, music, and theatre. The only spectator sport she enjoyed was women’s basketball, fascinated by the modern rules that allowed all players on the court to shoot the ball, something that was not allowed in her high school days. She is survived by her daughter, Marie.
A graveside service and internment will be at Waterside Cemetery, 294 West Shore Drive, Marblehead, on Friday, February 13 at 11AM. Arrangements by Eustis and Cornell of Marblehead.
