Laurel dedicated nearly 50 years of her life to nursing, a career that perfectly matched her kind, caring, and compassionate nature. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren. Laurel had an unflappable moral compass and never shied away from expressing her views - or attending a protest. To know Laurel was to know how truly diehard a New England Patriots fan can be.
She had a sharp wit and a matter-of-fact, honest way of speaking that her family and friends adored. Laurel loved cooking, gardening, camping, and was truly at home on any beach. She enjoyed spicy food, a good laugh, and loud music—especially Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as her absolute favorite: her partner's rendition of “What a Wonderful World”.
She is survived by her life partner, James Mahoney; her sons, Brandon Whitney, and Garrett Whitney and his wife, Cassandra; and her beloved grandchildren, Ronan and Poppy. She also leaves behind her siblings, Barry Walker and his wife, Joy Walker; Elaine Walker; and Brian Walker, along with many nieces and nephews. Laurel was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband, R. Donald Whitney.
A celebration of Laurel's life will be held at the Masonic Hall at 62 Pleasant St in Marblehead on July 18th from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
If you are so inclined, in lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her name to ASAPROSAR, an organization to which she had also donated her time and expertise.
