Lawrence Loring Burckmyer, 80, of Marblehead, died at the Devereux House on June 2, 2010, after a long illness. He was the husband of Rebekah (McCandlish) Burckmyer, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage. Born in Ithaca, NY, he was the son of the late Lawrence Adams and Elizabeth (Loring) Burckmyer.
Larry graduated from Ithaca High School in 1948 and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1952. He reported for active service in the United States Navy in 1952 and served aboard the USS Perry, based in Newport, RI. He transferred to the Boston Naval Shipyard in 1954. For over three decades, Larry served as the owner and president of Backer-Loring Corporation, a sheet metal fabrication company in Peabody. After his retirement in 1999, he became an advisor for Broad Street Capital, a venture capital partnership. He was a 210 racing sailor and a longtime member of the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead. An avid skier, he frequented the slopes of Mad River Glen and later Sugarloaf. He was also an accomplished photographer: his favorite subjects were his friends and family, with whom he loved to spend time. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by a son, Charles Burckmyer, of Boston; three daughters, Elizabeth Anderson and her husband James of Washington, D.C.; Mary Spencer and her husband Hawes of Charlottesville, VA; and Sarah Westwood and her husband John of Swampscott; seven grandchildren, James and Austin Anderson; Coleman, Mary Campbell, and Anne Loring Spencer; and Charles and Elizabeth Westwood; his sister-in-law Mary Smith McCandlish of Winchester, VA; a nephew, Robert McCandlish of Fairfax, VA; and a niece, Caroline McCandlish Blonkowski of Durham, NC.
