Pauline Ella Hilton Andrews (Polly), 86, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, formerly of Newport, New Hampshire, and West Peabody, Massachusetts, passed away Saturday March 16, 2019 from complications of diabetes.
Born in Norridgewock, Maine, October 28, 1932, daughter of Lora Yeaton and Ralph B. Hilton of Anson, Maine. She attended Norridgewock High School and graduated from Madison High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine at Orono. After college, she spent a year visiting farms in New Zealand as an International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) participant. While working for the County Extension Service in Aroostook County, she met and married the right man, Andrew (Andy) Andrews (passed in 2014), a newspaper man from Newport, New Hampshire. Together they raised four daughters, passing on their love of nature and outdoor adventure.
Polly worked as a Home Economics teacher, first at the Kennedy Junior High School, then the Peabody Veterans Memorial High School where she was also the faculty advisor to the student newspaper. She volunteered with the Peabody Historical Society, the Newport Planning Board, and the Newport Service Organization which provided funding for local community groups, and was a very active supporter in the Democratic Party.
Survived by her siblings Ellen Savard, Bernard Hilton, and Mary Shorey; and daughters Andrea Andrews and her husband Dale Mirth, Athena and her husband Phillip Rodbell, Alicia Andrews and her husband Mark Schmidt, and Elizabeth and her husband Michael Moscone; by eight grandchildren, Jennifer Cantell, Allison Schmidt, Janie Cantell, Anna McGinty, Sophia and Phoebe Rodbell, and Cassandra and Michaela Moscone; two great grandchildren Christopher and Abigail Orne, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She cherished her many friends in Newport and the camaraderie they shared.
She is predeceased by siblings Caroline Sturtevant, Louise Varnam, Jennie Hilton, Franklin Hilton, and Rena Hilton.
A viewing will be held on Monday, March 25, 2019, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm with a memorial celebration of Polly’s life immediately after at Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead, Mass., (781) 631-0076.
