

Richard was born in Painesville, Ohio on March 14, 1944. He graduated from Harvey High School where he was student body president and excelled at many sports. Richard went on to study architecture at North Carolina State University. After graduating, he joined the architectural firm of Hugh Stubbins in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he went on to serve as president of The Stubbins Associates. His work on many major buildings took him all over the world and travel became one of his passions. He received many professional awards, including the Rotch Travel Scholarship and the Loeb Fellowship.
Richard was the father of two sons, Kevin (Kelly) of Seattle, Washington and Tyler (Missy) of Scottsdale, Arizona. His four grandchildren are Margaret and Elizabeth of Seattle and Lilly and Grady of Scottsdale.
Richard lived most of his adult life in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He and his wife Joan enjoyed sailing their boat Ravello and were members of the Corinthian Yacht Club for over forty years. They also spent most Sunday mornings having breakfast with their group of friends at the Driftwood restaurant.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan Nelson, and his brother Bill Green. He is survived by his children and grandchildren as well as his sister Joanne Gurley and numerous nieces and nephews.
In his notes about his life he said “I devoted my life to my passion for collecting experiences, not things, and I am forever grateful to everyone who helped me along the way and to the incredible world in which I lived.”
At his request there will be no service. Gifts of remembrance in his honor can be made to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
