Dick was born in Newton, MA, to parents Richard Marcy, Sr., and Polly Godfrey Marcy. The family had already settled in Marblehead, and Dick lived nearly all of his 85 years in the town. He attended Roads School and Marblehead High School before completing high school at Tabor Academy.
His lifelong love for sailing began early. By age 7 he was sailing his own 14-foot catboat Skip Jack and by age 8 he was successfully competing in junior race week and crewing for his father in bigger races. At Tabor, he was the executive officer of the 92-foot student-run schooner Tabor Boy. Throughout his life, he relished daysailing around Marblehead, as well as longer sailing trips that took him up and down the entire east coast and as far as Panama.
Dick studied mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (class of 1963), where he enrolled in the ROTC program. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division and spent several years stationed in Germany. He resigned his commission in 1968 to study business at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School, where he received his MBA.
His career in banking began in 1970, at the First National Bank of Boston, later known as Bank of Boston. He met his former wife, Linda Corbett (now Linda Macdonald), at the bank. In his three decades there, he held a number of different roles and rose to Vice President. His work managing the bank’s investments took him all over the world. He retired in 2000.
In retirement, Dick found more time for sailing and enjoying his growing family, as well as volunteering with the Marblehead Conservancy. He had fond childhood memories of playing in Marblehead’s woods, marshes, and fields, and the conservation of these natural spaces was important to him. He spent many happy hours helping the Conservancy maintain public walking trails, often with his beloved dog Coco by his side.
He is survived by his sister, Lee Barth; his brother, Grosvenor Marcy; and his children, Ann Shin (John), with their daughter Natalie; Carter Marcy (Jessica), with their daughters Anastazia and Stella; and Sally Marcy, with her daughters Beatrix and Juliana. He is also survived by his dear friend Kathy Breslin and countless other good friends.
A gathering to honor Dick’s life will be held this summer. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at eustisandcornellfuneralhome.com.
