

Timothy D. Hough, Marblehead, died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on January 31, after a brave battle with colon cancer. He was 55. A British citizen, he was the son of the late David and Ena Hough of Derbyshire, England. He is survived by his wife, Gail, a daughter, Alexandra, age 21, a son, James, age 19, and a sister Rosalind Wallen and her husband Tim of East Keswick, Yorkshire, England. The family lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 1996 through 2012. Tim served in the British Army. He attended Christ's College, Cambridge, where he earned an MA in Law. He was awarded a Kennedy Scholarship to Harvard Business School and earned his MBA in 1982. He joined McKinsey & Co.’s London office, and simultaneously opened several restaurants in London, bringing gourmet pizza and TexMex to the Clapham neighborhood. After a time working for Courtaulds Textiles in Britain, he joined the L.E.K. Partnership, a London based consulting firm. He helped to open the Boston office of L.E.K. in 1986, becoming a partner of the firm shortly thereafter. He moved to Hong Kong in 1990 when he joined GJM, a manufacturer of lingerie for the Victoria Secrets chain. He joined Bain & Company in 1996 as the Managing Partner of the Johannesburg office in South Africa. He subsequently started his own consulting and training business in South Africa in 2003, Africa International Advisors. The company has a ten-year history of providing valuable assistance to both private business and especially to government agencies in South Africa. In the words of the current South African Minister for Public Service and Administration, “He has indeed made a valuable contribution in the building of a capable South African state.” Tim was the ultimate entrepreneur and man of action. He was always looking for opportunities to make a difference both in the running of government in South Africa and in the lives of individuals. He was an active member of Rivers Church in Johannesburg. He managed many of their outreach projects, refurbishing schools and hospice homes in disadvantaged areas. Tim was an avid sailor and a former member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead. A Memorial Service will be held at the Old North Church, 35 Washington St, Marblehead, at 1:00 PM on Thursday, Feb. 6.
