

Verna (Erwin) Irons, 78, of Marblehead, beloved wife of the late G. Steele Irons died on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at her home in Marblehead. Born in Barnstead, NH she was the daughter of the late Richard and Margaret (Marston) Erwin.
Verna was a graduate of Dean Academy in Franklin, MA. She continued her education at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Verna later graduated from Keene State College in 1959. She later took Masters’ level courses at the University of CT in Storrs.
Verna taught English in Swampscott prior to her marriage. After her marriage, she stayed home with her four children. She loved to bake and delighted in sharing with others. Verna faithfully attended and supported her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. She later taught 2nd grade at Our Lady of Grace in Everett, MA. She loved her students.
Verna was a dedicated member of St. Stephen’s United Methodist church for over 40 years. She worked on many church committees throughout the years. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She was affectionately called Ga, a name she grew to love. Verna was a caring person with a big heart. She will be missed by many.
She is survived by her daughter Liane M. Irons and her husband Manuel DaRocha; her son Dr. John Irons and his wife Nancy; her son Richard Irons and his wife Jahan; her son Frank Irons and his wife Kim. She leaves her beloved grandchildren, Olivia and Emma DaRocha, Claire and Steele Irons, Tess and Russell Irons and Izzy Irons. She also leaves a step grandson Manny John DaRocha. Verna leaves her two brothers and their wives, Marston and Geri Erwin and David and Tricia Erwin. She also leaves many dear nieces and nephews. Verna was the sister of the late Charles Erwin and Isabelle Romanow.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church, 67 Cornell Road, Marblehead on Wednesday, January 6 at 10:30AM. Burial to follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. All are welcome. Visiting hours will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead on Tuesday, January 5 from 4-8PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Verna E. Irons Memorial Fund at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church at 67 Cornell Road in Marblehead, MA.
