Born on November 8, 1949 in Belvidere, Al graduated from Marengo Community High School before serving in the United State Army from 1969 to 1971. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he fought courageously in Vietnam and was wounded on his 21st birthday. In recognition of his bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Following his military service, Al attended Washington Trade School in Chicago and became a skilled meat cutter. He worked for Super Value, Jewel, Marengo Packing, and Jones Packing before transitioning to Warner Electric, where he dedicated 42 years of service before retiring in 2012 due to health reasons.
Al found joy in life's simple pleasures--spending time outdoors, chopping wood, planting flowers, and taking road trips. An avid golfer, he cherished every opportunity to be on the course. He also enjoyed traveling and dining at his favorite restaurant, Colony House. Despite his illness, he never complained and remained steadfast in his willingness to help others.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Patricia (nee Wagner); his sister Bryce Johnson (Bob); brother-in-law, Keith Wagner (Vanessa); sister-in-law Joyce Wagner; nieces Lisa Lacher, Julie Schultz (Nathan), Rachel Schultz (Ryan Kopeke), and Amber Schultz; nephews Kelly Maynard (Stephanie), Jakob Maynard, and Jarrid Maynard; and his beloved new puppy, Cookey. He also shared a special friendship with Kathy Paprocki (Gene).
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Marcella and John Brown; his aunt Ollie Wunderlich (Dwight Dyer); and brother-in-law Martin Wagner (Roberta).
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Sunday, May 18 at Niko's Grill & Pub, 7509 S Grant Hwy, Marengo.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
