Born on August 27, 1939, in Cotulla, Texas, Dominga was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whose life was devoted to her family, her faith, and caring for others.
Dominga was married to her beloved husband, Delfino Chavera, for 35 years. Together, they raised four children. Following the loss of her husband, Dominga showed remarkable strength and independence, continuing to make sure her children and grandchildren were always cared for. She was a source of comfort and guidance to her family, always ready with advice, a warm embrace, or one of her unforgettable hugs. Her contagious laughter brought joy to those around her, and she was someone you were proud to call Mom, Grandma, Sister, Daughter, and Friend.
Her faith was an important part of her life. Above all else, Dominga loved to pray and pray for others. Anyone who knew her could ask her to pray for them and know that she truly would. Her faith and caring spirit were reflected in the way she looked after those she loved. As family and friends left her home, she would often send them off with her familiar words, “Que Dios Te Bendiga” (May God Bless You).
Dominga was a self-taught quilter who loved sewing and creating quilts for others. There was very little she couldn't mend with a needle and thread, and she found happiness in turning individual pieces into something beautiful. Much like the quilts she lovingly made, her life was a patchwork of love, laughter, faith, and family. Every stitch represented a memory, every thread a connection, and every piece a part of the legacy she leaves behind. Though her hands may no longer sew, the love she stitched into her family will forever hold them together. She also had a special love for babies. She loved talking and watching them as she shared in their joy. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her own family.
Dominga is survived by her brother, Reymundo Garza; her four children, Carlos Chavera, Steve Chavera, Daniel Chavera (Vicki), and Estela Becker (John); her 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Delfino Chavera; her parents; and her siblings, Rafael Garza, Ramon Garza, Salome Garza, Maximo Garza, Tomasa Galvan, Aurelio Garza, and Alberta Vasquez.
Visitation will be held at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, 505 East Grant Highway, Marengo, on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 323 N. Taylor St., Marengo at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Serenity Hospice Home in gratitude for the care and compassion shown to Dominga and her family.
Her hands may be at rest, but the love she stitched into her family will never come undone. Her memory will live on through every generation, every story shared, and every piece of the beautiful family quilt she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
