Hayden Andrew Johnson, 20, of Marengo, Illinois, passed away quietly on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with his parents, Stephanie Dorethy and Jason Hertel, by his side. His life, though far too brief, was filled with gentleness, humor, and a deep love for the people and comforts that made him feel at home.
Hayden enjoyed anime, playing video games, drawing, listening to music, reading, and spending time with his beloved cats, Apollo and Athena. A true homebody, he cherished quiet evenings with family and found joy in the simple, peaceful moments of everyday life. Though he often appeared introverted, Hayden was witty, clever, and a jokester at heart; someone who could surprise you with a perfectly timed comment or a warm, unexpected laugh.
He worked at Jewel-Osco in Woodstock for over two years, where he was highly regarded by his managers and team. Hayden was also attending McHenry Community College, studying CNC machining, and participated in the 18–22 ETCHED program in Harvard, where he formed many friendships and built strong relationships with his teachers.
Hayden was a kind and gentle soul, a devoted son, and a loving big brother. His family will forever remember his quiet strength, his soft heart, and the way he made their world better simply by being in it. He will be missed more than words can express.
Hayden was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Frank and Jean Dorethy, Donna Hays, and J. Fowler (Paw Paw).
He leaves behind his parents, Stephanie Dorethy and Jason Hertel; his siblings, Skyler Hertel and Summer Hertel; his grandparents, Wayne and Delores Dorethy and Don and Donna Hertel; and his great-grandparents, Don and Martha Hays; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him deeply.
Because Hayden never cared for formal events, a celebration of life will be scheduled soon in a way that truly reflects who he was and honors his memory.
