

Nicholas Westin Herrera, 27, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on September 21, 2025. He was born on February 2, 1998, in Elgin, Illinois, to Jennifer Wilson (Kwame W.) and Miguel Angel Herrera (Lupe M.).
Nicholas is survived by his beloved older sisters, Niesha Kirk and Maria Hartsell-Herrera; younger brothers, Nathan and Cole Hartsell; younger sisters, Cherish and Chelsea Wilson, Emily Herrera, Melanie Herrera, and América Hernández Martínez; and step-siblings Nash “Rocky” Wilson and Linda Wilson. He also leaves behind his cherished nephews, Jude and Jack Varela, who adored their uncle deeply. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Shirley and Mark Karsten Sr., and his paternal grandmother in Mexico.
A graduate of West Carroll High School, Class of 2016, in Savanna, Illinois, Nicholas went on to pursue further education at college and later built a career with Wink Optical in Chicago, where he was a dedicated and valued employee for many years.
Nicholas was more than his work, however. He was a gifted spoken word poet and visual artist, known and admired in the Chicago arts community for his creativity, passion, and authentic voice. His art reflected his heart—vibrant, bold, and deeply human.
As both an advocate and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community in Chicago, Nicholas was a source of support, encouragement, and love for those around him. He touched countless lives with his warmth, compassion, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. To know Nicholas was to experience his light. He was a genuine ray of sunshine whose spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were inspired by him.
Nicholas’s legacy of love, artistry, and advocacy will never be forgotten. His family, friends, and community will continue to honor his memory by carrying forward the joy and kindness he so effortlessly shared.
A Celebration of Nicholas's life will be held Friday, September 26, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, 505 East Grant Highway, Marengo, IL 60152. This will continue on Saturday, September 27, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 505 East Grant Highway, Marengo, IL 60152, followed by a prayer service. A committal service will occur Saturday, September 27, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at City of Marengo Cemetery, 101-199 N East St, Marengo, IL 60152.
