Rodney Bruce Poppe

Rodney Bruce Poppe, 94, passed away peacefully on September 4th, 2026. Throughout his battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, he was blessed to maintain the kind manner and goodness he was long known for by family, friends and the community.

He enjoyed a long and happy life with his beloved wife of 66 years, Irene Poppe (Telschow) prior to her death in 2021. He will be remembered for his faithful commitment to the institutions that mattered most to him and his lifelong dedication to helping young people grow.

Visitation will be at Marengo Union Funeral home in Marengo from 4:00 to 6:00 on Friday, September 11th and also at Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Saturday September 12th, followed by a service at 11:00 AM at Zion. A Fellowship will be held at the church following services.

Born on July 6, 1932, in Belvidere Illinois, to Fred and Elda Poppe (Miller) and raised in Union Illinois, Rodney’s life was shaped by his parents and extended family to whom he remained dedicated. He led a life defined by education, athletics, faith, and steady service to others. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education and was a two-sport athlete during his time at the University of Colorado and Valparaiso University. He continued his studies through master’s work in Colorado, Tennessee, and Washington, and throughout his lifetime, pursued continuing education opportunities across the country, including in Hawaii, as well as during an extended trip to the USSR in 1968. Learning remained an important part of his life, and his academic pursuits accompanied a career centered on teaching, leadership, and the development of students and athletes.

Rodney married Irene on July 9, 1955 and they soon began a new chapter together in Fort Hood, Texas where Rodney reported for two years of Army service. During that time, he welcomed his first born at the Army base hospital. Following his service, Rodney and Irene moved to Marengo, Illinois where they went on to raise four children and build a cherished life together.

His entire professional career was spent at Marengo Community High School, where he served as a coach, teacher, administrator, and athletic director. Over the course of those years, he became closely associated with the school and its athletic programs, contributing in multiple roles that shaped generations of students. He was especially known for a successful coaching career in football, including a remarkable 45-game winning streak with the Marengo Indians. His work earned recognition from Valparaiso University, Marengo Community High School, the Illinois Athletic Association, and other organizations, reflecting the broad respect he received within education and athletics. He was honored to have the outdoor fields at MCHS bear his name.

Faith in God held a central place in Rodney’s life. He was dedicated to service as a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Marengo. His faith played a primary role in how he lived and raised his family, and it supported him throughout life’s successes and challenges. That religious foundation remained a defining part of his life.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Rodney remained active in many pursuits that brought him enjoyment and broadened his experiences. He participated in a fast pitch softball league and golf leagues and enjoyed bike rides and RV travel with Irene in many parts of the country. Travel was one of his enduring interests, taking him throughout the United States and to many other countries. He also enjoyed visiting historical sites and national parks, interests that reflected his curiosity about places, people, and the wider world.

Rodney also supported numerous charities that provided education, research, and support for many organizations internationally. His giving reflected concerns that reached across borders and causes, and it formed another part of a life marked by engagement and service.

He is survived by his children Linda Greenhagen of Livermore California, Ellen Doescher and husband David of Carpentersville Illinois, Steven Poppe of Portland Oregon, and Karen Poppe of Marengo Illinois. Also, his 5 grandchildren Rochelle Greenhagen and husband Kevin Malone, Elissa Knoff and husband Drew Van Denover, Kristin Heller and husband John, Meredith Knoff, Serena Doescher, and 2 great granddaughters Hailey and Reese Heller. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Elda Poppe, his beloved wife Irene Poppe, and his son-in-law Jeffery Greenhagen.

Rodney Poppe will be remembered for a lifetime of work in education and athletics, for his commitment to faith and service, and for the lasting record of his years in Marengo schools and community life. His life was one of constancy, purpose, and dedication, and his memory will remain with those who knew him and with the many communities and organizations he served.
