Alfonso Pernía Esteban

Alfonso nació el 28 de abril de 1942 en Santa Marta, Colombia. Hijo de Ricardo Pernía y Ana Esteban, recordaba su infancia como una etapa feliz junto a sus 6 hermanos, a los que quería entrañablemente y a los que estuvo unido durante toda su vida. Su padre, funcionario público, trasladó a la familia al barrio Quiroga de Bogotá, donde Alfonso guardaba gratos recuerdos de cuando jugaba al fútbol con sus vecinos y conoció al amor de su vida y futura esposa durante 56 años, María Victoria Daza. Estableció vínculos entrañables con los padres de María Victoria y sus 11 hermanos, convirtiéndose él mismo en un hermano para ellos. Alfonso y María Victoria salieron juntos durante 8 años y 8 meses antes de casarse en 1967 y tener tres hijos, Ana Victoria, Alfonso y Edme, y seis nietos.

Alfonso trabajó intensamente para convertirse en contador y CPA. Fue profesor universitario y el 3 de marzo de 1972 fundó la firma Cesar Rovira & Cía. Como socio fundador y director, la firma se convirtió en el miembro colombiano de Coopers & Lybrand, una de las «Cuatro Grandes» firmas de auditoría de Estados Unidos. La firma se fusionó con Price Waterhouse en 2001 y Alfonso fue socio durante 3 años hasta su jubilación. Como expresaron sus empleados y colegas, Alfonso era más que un jefe, era un mentor, un amigo, una figura paterna. «Alfonso fue un gran líder que dejó profunda huella en quienes tuvimos la fortuna de trabajar con y para él. Tenia un compromiso natural con su gente y con la profesión contable en Colombia, legado que inculcó a una gran cantidad de profesionales que se formaron en las huestes de la firma durante sus casi 30 años de operación hasta la integración con PwC.» Creó un ambiente de trabajo que valoraba a su gente y lo impulsó a convertirse en una gran familia, tanto así que décadas después de su retiro, continuó manteniendo estrechos lazos con aquellos cuyas vidas había tocado.

En casa, Alfonso era un esposo amorso, padre y abuelo cariñoso. Dedicó su vida a dar a su familia todo lo que necesitaba, pero sobre todo enseñó a sus hijos a valorar a Dios y a la familia, a ser justos, generosos, amables y a tratar a todos con respeto, desde el conserje hasta el presidente de Colombia. A honrar a nuestros mayores. Enseñó a sus hijos a apreciar lo que tienen y a compartir su buena fortuna con sus familias y con los necesitados. También les enseñó la importancia de la familia, y él era el imán que mantenía unida a su extensa familia.

Alfonso vivía la vida al máximo. Disfrutaba de una buena reunión, viajaba, le gustaba jugar tenis e ir al estadio a verlo, así como el fútbol y el béisbol. Le encantaban los vallenatos, el whisky y el mar. Pero sobre todo, amaba a su esposa y a su familia. Era el mejor padre y el mejor abuelo. Cuando su esposa enfermó, la cuidó con una paciencia y un amor dignos de admiración. Cuando le tocó enfrentarse a la adversidad en la salud, afrontó el reto con valentía, fe, esperanza y siempre con una sonrisa amable y unos ojos gentiles. Sólo alguien con su temperamento y carácter podría haber dado a todos semejante ejemplo de fortaleza. Era todo un caballero.

El 29 de diciembre de 2024 falleció en paz, rodeado de amor. Estamos seguros que se regocija en la presencia del Señor, junto a María Victoria, y que ahora están “Finalmente Junos.”

Su funeral tendrá lugar el 18 de enero de 2025 a las 11:00 de la mañana en la Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora, seguido de una celebración de vida en la Funeraria Kraeer en Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens North de 2:00 a 6:00 de la tarde.

Alfonso was born on April 28, 1942 in Santa Marta, Colombia. The son of Ricardo Pernia and Ana Esteban, he recalled his childhood as a happy one with his 6 siblings, whom he loved dearly and to whom he was close throughout his life. His father, a public servant, moved the family to the Quiroga neighborhood of Bogota, where Alfonso had fond memories of playing soccer with his neighbors and meeting the love of his life and future wife of 56 years, Maria Victoria Daza. He formed lasting bonds with Maria Victoria's parents and her 11 siblings, becoming a brother to them himself. Alfonso and Maria Victoria dated for 8 years and 8 months before marrying in 1967 and having three children, Ana Victoria, Alfonso and Edme, and six grandchildren.

Alfonso worked hard to become an accountant and CPA. He was a university professor and on March 3, 1972, he founded the firm Cesar Rovira & Cía. As founding partner and director, the firm became the Colombian member of Coopers & Lybrand, one of the "Big Four" accounting firms in the United States. The firm merged with Price Waterhouse in 2001 and Alfonso served as a partner for 3 years until his retirement. As expressed by his employees and colleagues, Alfonso was more than a boss, he was a mentor, a friend, a father figure. "He was a great leader who left a deep mark on those who were fortunate enough to work with and for him. He was committed to his people and to the profession in Colombia, a legacy that forged a large number of professionals who were formed in the firm during its almost 30 years of operation." He created a work environment that valued its people and drove it to become one big family, so much so that decades after his retirement, he continued to maintain close ties with those whose lives he had touched.

At home, Alfonso was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He dedicated his life to giving his family everything they needed, but most of all, he taught his children to value God and family, to be fair, just, generous, kind, and to treat everyone with respect, from the janitor to the president of Colombia. To honor our elders. He taught his children to appreciate what they have and to share their good fortune with their families and those in need. He also taught them the importance of family, and he was the magnet that held our extended family together.

Alfonso lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed a good get-together, traveled, enjoyed playing tennis and going to the stadium to watch it, as well as soccer and baseball. He loved vallenatos, scotch and the ocean. But most of all, he loved his wife and family. He was the best father and the best “Grandpa”. When his wife became ill, he cared for her with patience and love that was to be admired. When it was his turn to face adversity in health, he faced the challenge with courage, faith, hope and always with a kind smile and gentle eyes. Only someone with his temperament and character could have given everyone such an example of strength. He was a gentleman.

On December 29, 2024, he passed away in peace, surrounded by love. We are sure that he is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord, next to Maria Victoria, and that they are "finally together".

His Funeral will be held at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church on January 18th, 2025 at 11:00 am, followed by a Celebration of Life at Kraeer Funeral Home at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens North from 2:00 - 6:00 pm.
