Dan is preceded in death by father James, mother Hazel and twin brother David.
Dan was a standout student and class president at Maumee High School. He was co-captain of our wrestling team. After high school he studied at Ohio State and then earned his master’s in Russian history at the University of Toledo, all the time dreaming and talking of world travel. Postponing his formal education, he headed out alone, first to New Zealand and then England, Europe, Russia then to Australia. Landing in Sydney, he got a job working on construction on a high rise. Then he set out hitch hiking west through the desert to Perth where he panned for gold. From there he hiked the Himalayas and then lived in India for a short time.
Once home, he set his sites on further education and attended University of Missouri earning his doctorate in Russian history and maybe a life in academia. Instead, he interviewed for a teaching position at Coconut Creek High School, Florida. Dan taught history for 34 years and coached wrestling for fifteen years. His teams became the team to beat in Broward County.
Every year he would come back to Maumee to visit with family and friends in the summer and Christmas. For his friends, those days on the Dussel patio and Christmas visits will be forever cherished. He will be dearly missed by his buddies.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly ask that you make a donation in Dan's honor to a cause or charity of your choice.
