BARNES, James A., 86 of Pompano Beach, passed away September 9, 2011. Loving husband of Rita Barnes. Loving step father of Bruce Ryan, Scott(Kimberly) Ryan; Devoted grandfather of Connor, Brendan, Kiernan and Calen Ryan. James was an only child born in Camas, WA. The family moved to NY State when he was very young. He attended schools in Geneva NY through high school, maintaining excellent grades except in foreign languages. James played tennis, football, ice hockey, track and field, running, climbed mountains in the Adirondacks, and some hunting and lots of fishing. James started Mass. Institute of Tech, volunteered for the Air Force and served 39 months attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. James returned to MIT graduating in 1951. Two major employers were Bell Aerospace and Motorola. James proudest family moments were his parents taking him to almost all of the 48 states where he climbed most of the named mountains. James’ proudest career accomplishment was participating in the design of auto pilots in helicopters. His proudest civic accomplishment was helping apprehend people smuggling drugs from Canada. Special Awards were over a dozen Silver Quill awards, Scientific and Technical Society Awards patent number 37SC142 and several others. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
