Barbara M. Schwanebeck, age 86, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mildred Mordecai; her sister, Carol Mordecai; and her daughter, Deborah Schwanebeck.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Joseph C. “Chris” Schwanebeck; her brother, William “Bill” Mordecai and his wife, Barbara; her son, Charles Schwanebeck; her daughter, Lisa Hall and her husband, John; and many beloved grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Barbara lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and a deep devotion to her family and church. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1957 and Agnes Scott College in 1961 before building a fulfilling career as a tax accountant.
Barbara had a love for numbers and finances from an early age. Family fondly recalled that her first word after “Mama” and “Dada” was “bank.” That interest carried throughout her life. At church, she served as chair of the Finance Committee and as registrar for churchwide and women’s annual activities for more than 20 years. She was also very active in making quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
Barbara’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at First United Lutheran Church in Kennesaw, Georgia. A reception will follow the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church.
