Barry Kenneth Christensen, age 78, of Marietta, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025. He was born in Chicago, IL on August 18, 1946, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Farlow) Christensen. Barry dedicated his life to others, befriending any person who crossed his path, and always prioritized caring for the people around him. To know him was to love him and to feel loved by him.
Barry graduated from Georgia State University with a Master’s Degree in Education. While attending college, he worked for the Atlanta Chiefs soccer team while also inspiring countless young athletes through working with sports programs at the Buckhead YMCA. Throughout this time, he was instrumental in bringing recreational soccer to the city of Atlanta, making soccer more accessible for all children.
Barry was a teacher, administrator and athletic director in the Cobb County and Marietta City Schools. Barry served as a trusted mentor and father figure to many students and young adults. Staff and students affectionately knew him as “Mr. C”. Barry’s impact on students’ lives reached far beyond the classroom or sports field. His friendly smile and witty sarcasm won the hearts of many; and his deep empathy and compassion allowed him to form meaningful connections with the youth surrounding him. In addition to his educational impact, Barry served as Treasurer of the Marietta Touchdown Club, coached Alex and Abby’s soccer teams through the Cobb Futbol Club, and was a leader of Boy Scout Troop 252.
Barry’s faith was very important to him and he devoutly worshiped the Lord through his church for many years. Barry served as both a deacon and elder, participated in countless mission trips and was a long-time volunteer in many areas throughout the church, but mainly within the youth programs.
Barry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan A. Christensen; children, Alex Kenneth
Christensen (wife Abigail) and Abby Elizabeth Christensen;
grandchildren, Lila Ray Christensen and Henry (Hank) Kenneth
Christensen.
Barry was a loving husband, selfless father, and doting “Papa Bear” to his grandchildren. May we all carry on the legacy of Barry’s servant heart and remember his sacrificial love and generous spirit.
In lieu of flowers, please direct donations towards the Marietta Community Church (C/o: Mission Ministry or Youth Program) or the Emory ALS Center.
