

Mr. James W. Herndon, age 83 of Marietta, GA passed away Monday, August 22, 2016 after an extended illness. "Jim" was born in Talking Rock, GA and grew up and remained in Gordon County until graduating from Oostanaula High School. He moved to Atlanta and married Betty Duvall, his loving wife of 63 years. Jim served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict as a communications instructor at Camp Gordon in Augusta, GA. After his military service, Jim graduated from Atlanta Law School and resumed his career with Western Electric Co., as a central office maintenance and installations engineer. He retired from the Bell system with 40 years of service. After retirement, Jim worked for several years for Fujitsu Electric. Jim was dedicated to his family and in his later years he and Betty enjoyed visiting Tybee Island and travelling elsewhere. He and his brother Buddy cared for their parents during their later years. Jim was very involved with his 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his morning coffee buddies for decades, sometimes known as the McDonald's Chamber of Commerce. Jim will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Clyde H. and Pearl S. Herndon. Jim is survived by his wife Betty, son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sandy Herndon; grandson, Jay Herndon; granddaughter, Stephanie Neal and her husband Nathan Neal and their 2 children, Taylor Neal and Charlee Neal, all of Marietta; brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Sara Herndon, of Adairsville, GA ; brother-in-law, Alvin Duvall of Cave Spring, GA and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 25 at 3 p.m. at the Carmichael Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta with Reverend Mike Woods officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity.
