

Janice was born and raised in Statesboro, Georgia, where she developed the warmth, humor, and generosity that defined her throughout her life. She was full of life, had a great sense of humor, and truly never met a stranger. Anyone who crossed her path was likely to be greeted with a smile, a laugh, and an open heart.
Known affectionately as “Big Mama,” Janice had a lifelong love for Christmas, celebrating the season with unmatched enthusiasm and joy. She also loved gardening and cooking, passions she carried throughout her life, and her home was always a welcoming place. Janice never hesitated to open her door—or her table—to anyone in need of company, comfort, or a good meal.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest “Diki” Dikilato; her son, Benny Pate; her grandson, Nathan Pate; her parents, Bernard and Marie Smith; and her siblings, Charlie Smith, Johnny Smith, Loomon Hoyle Smith, Bobby Smith, Joyce Barber, Sue Cook, Shirley Pless Strange, and her twin Jarrell Smith.
Janice is survived by her beloved daughter, Nancy Pate Gault, and her cherished grandchildren, Daniel Pate, Sara Gault, Alexandra Walters, and Geana Gault, all of whom were a great source of pride and joy in her life.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Carmichael Funeral Home, 2950 King St SE, Smyrna, GA 30080. Visitation will take place from 1:00–2:00 PM, followed by the service at 2:00 PM, with a reception afterward.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Kennesaw Memorial Park.
Janice will be deeply missed and remembered for her laughter, her generosity, and the way she made everyone feel like family. She was loved by all who knew her.
