Born on January 28, 1951, in Marietta, Georgia, Joey was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished Gdaddy, talented craftsman, outdoorsman, and friend. He lived a life defined by hard work, humor, and an unwavering love for his family.
A gifted carpenter, Joey spent many years beautifying homes throughout the community through his remodeling business. His craftsmanship could be seen not only in the homes he improved for others, but most importantly in the home he built for his own family. In 1988, Joey and his beloved wife, Kathy, purchased property in Hiram with a dream of creating a family sanctuary. Joey brought that dream to life with his own hands, clearing the land, laying the foundation, and carefully building every detail of the home that would become the heart of countless family memories.
His talents extended far beyond carpentry. An accomplished woodworker, Joey created treasured pieces for his family to enjoy for generations. From handcrafted furniture to a regulation-size pool table, complete with wooden legs he turned himself, he took pride in creating things from his own vision, with his own hands.
A real “Mr. Fix-It”, there wasn't anything Joey couldn't repair, build, or figure out. If there was something they wanted, he would find a way to make it or repurpose something he already had. His children and grandchildren often called him for help on a project, and he always took the time to explain the right way to fix or build it. His wisdom and practical knowledge became one of the greatest gifts he shared with his family.
People naturally gravitated towards Joey's quick wit and sense of humor. He could make others laugh with ease, and even in his final days, glimpses of that beloved humor brought comfort and smiles to his family.
Joey had a remarkable connection with animals. The dogs adored him and could usually be found curled up beside him in his recliner. His wooded property was his sanctuary, and he delighted in feeding the deer and wild turkeys that frequented the land. It never ceased to amaze his family how comfortable wild animals seemed in his presence, as if they were drawn to his spirit.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Joey was a true outdoorsman. Skilled in taxidermy, he personally preserved many of his hunting trophies and mounted projects for customers including ducks, fish, turkeys, deer, and more. Bass fishing was his favorite pastime, and no one could rival his success on the water. Even on days when no one else in the boat caught a single fish, Joey somehow returned home with a cooler full. It was as though he and the fish had an understanding. He loved beating the sunrise for his first cast, but what he treasured most was fishing with his children and grandchildren. He shared a special bond with his brother, Benny, and together they formed an impressive team, competing in and winning numerous bass tournaments through the years.
Above all else, Joey's family was his pride and joy. His love for Kathy was evident in both grand and simple ways, including the old driver's license photo of her that he carried in his wallet simply because he loved it. He shared a special bond with his son, Allen, through their mutual love of cars, fishing, and working together. He and his daughter, Alicia, were especially close, connected by their many similarities and deep understanding of one another.
His grandchildren adored their Gdaddy, and he treasured each one of them. Whether he was teaching them new skills, helping them solve a problem, sharing stories, or simply making them laugh, he built unique and meaningful relationships with every grandchild. The lessons he taught and the memories he created will remain with them forever.
Joey is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kathy Thurmond; his children, Allen Thurmond (Jenna) and Alicia Schuster (Matt); his grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, and Ryan Thurmond, and Audrey and Natalie Schuster; his sisters, Carolyn Lovvorn and Jeannie Ross (Terry); and his nephew Jason Lovvorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl (Red) and Katherine Thurmond, and his brother, Benny Thurmond.
Though Joey will be missed beyond measure, those who knew him find comfort in the countless memories he leaves behind and in the enduring example of a life well lived.
