

2026. He was born to parents James Smith Sr. and Laverne Beasley Smith on March 8, 1948, in Sycamore, Georgia. Smitty enlisted in the United States Navy In 1966 and served with honor and distinction for 30 years before retiring as an Aviation
Ordnanceman Chief Petty Officer. After his military career, he became a police officer, dedicating 25 years to the Kennesaw State University Department of Public Safety before retiring.
Mr. Smith married Bonnie Jean, the love of his life, in 1969, who survives him. Smitty is also survived by his three sons, Jon Smith (Renee) of Lecompton, KS, Brian Smith
(Tracie) of Kennesaw, GA, David Smith (Somer) of Acworth, GA; seven grandchildren, Payton Smith-Morrell (Blake) of Kansas City, KS, Amelia Smith of Seattle, WA, Riley
Smith of Kennesaw, GA, Hayden Smith of Acworth, GA, Quinn Smith of Kennesaw, GA,
Hannah Smith of Acworth, GA, Hooper Smith of Acworth, GA; and several nieces and
nephews. Smitty is preceded in death by his parents, James and Laverne; three
siblings, Geraldine Bryant, Donald Smith, Willine Jewell; and one grandson, Hudson Smith.
Smitty was an accomplished woodworker and avid fisherman, who was also interested
in genealogy. He was known for his quick wit, great stories, and his love of cheesy sci-fi
books and movies. Above all else, he was a dedicated husband, father, and
grandfather who was always there for family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at the Mayes Ward Dobbins Macland Chapel in Powder
Springs, GA, on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends from
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service on Monday. Mayes Ward Dobbins Macland
Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
