Melanie was born on December 29, 1944, in Mobile, Alabama, to James Henry Hamilton and Martha Louise Hale Hamilton. She grew up in rural southern Alabama and graduated from Sweet Water High School in 1963. She went on to attend Livingston College in Livingston, Alabama, where she earned her teaching degree.
In 1967, Melanie moved to Marietta, Georgia, to begin her teaching career at Blackwell Elementary School. She taught first grade for 32 years before following her final class of students into second grade for her last year of teaching. During her career, she also earned a master's degree in Education from North Georgia College in Dahlonega in 1978. She retired in 2000 after 33 years at Blackwell Elementary, having devoted her entire teaching career to the same school and generations of young students.
Melanie was much more than a teacher to the children who passed through her classroom. She had a gift for making people feel welcome, cared for, and encouraged. Former students and fellow teachers remember her kindness, her encouragement, and the lasting influence she had on their lives. For many, she was not only a favorite teacher but someone who helped shape their love of learning and remained a cherished part of their memories long after they left her classroom.
On July 19, 1970, Melanie married James “Jim” Melvin Carroll at Sweet Water United Methodist Church in Sweet Water, Alabama. They made their home in Marietta, where they raised their three children and shared their lives together until Jim's passing in 2014.
Outgoing and social by nature, Melanie treasured her friendships and enjoyed spending time with the people she loved. She was a wonderful cook and especially enjoyed baking. Her homemade pound cakes became one of the many ways she showed her love and generosity. For years, she faithfully baked and delivered them to elderly and homebound members of Sandy Plains Baptist Church. These simple acts of kindness reflected her caring nature and her desire to brighten the lives of others.
Following her retirement, Melanie devoted countless hours to her beautiful flower gardens, which were a source of great pride and enjoyment. She especially loved her irises, roses, and zinnias and delighted in showing visitors what was blooming. Her home was rarely without a vase or two of freshly cut flowers from her garden. She shared this passion with her church as well, serving for many years as the head of landscaping at Sandy Plains Baptist Church.
Melanie also loved animals of all kinds. Over the years, she enjoyed the companionship of her beloved dogs, along with chickens, ducks, and even pigs. Whether working in her garden, caring for her animals, or sharing flowers with friends, she found happiness in life's simple pleasures.
A longtime member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church, Melanie valued her faith, her church family, and the friendships she made throughout her life. Whether in her classroom, at church, or among family and friends, she had a way of making people feel special and included.
Melanie is survived by her three children, James Hamilton Carroll, Thomas Edward Carroll and his wife, Sinwua, and Melanie Suzanne Carroll; her two beloved grandchildren, Maylu Carroll and Kylin Carroll; her brother, Gerald “Jerry” Hamilton of Wetumpka, Alabama; and her sister-in-law, Cindy Hamilton of Marietta, Georgia, wife of her late brother, James “Jimmy” Henry Hamilton, Jr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Melvin Carroll; her parents, James Henry and Martha Louise Hamilton; her brothers, James “Jimmy” Henry Hamilton, Jr. and Edward Randolph Hamilton; and her sister-in-law, Debra Hamilton, wife of her surviving brother, Gerald “Jerry” Hamilton.
Melanie may have always considered herself a simple country girl, but the lives she touched, the friendships she nurtured, and the love she shared leave a legacy that is anything but ordinary. Her influence lives on through her family, the countless students she taught, and the many people whose lives were made a little brighter by knowing her.
