Nancy Ruth Miller

Nancy Ruth Miller, age 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at her residence at Sterling Estates West, Marietta, Georgia, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born January 27, 1940 in Dawson, Georgia to Roland James and Alice Elizabeth Rigsby. Nancy grew up in Dawson and graduated from Terrell County high school with honors.

After high school, Nancy moved to Atlanta to attend Georgia Baptist School of Nursing where she received a diploma and became a registered nurse. She began her nursing career as a staff nurse in the Georgia Baptist Hospital emergency room. In 1963, she transferred to Germany and served as a staff nurse with the Army Hospital. Upon returning to the United States, she continued her service as a healthcare professional with the Georgia State Employee Health Services where she rose to the role of senior medical supervisor and was highly respected for her leadership and compassion. She reported directly to the Medical Director in charge who praised her for her work as a team leader for her coworkers.

After her successful employment with the State of Georgia, Nancy found employment as a school nurse for Woodward Academy. She found her tenure at Woodward to be the most enjoyable time of her nursing career. As a caring mother and nurse, she loved working with teenage students, which included her daughter, Kelly. Nancy retired from nursing and moved to Marietta when her husband changed jobs.

A few years after her nursing career ended, Nancy was blessed with two grandchildren, which she adored and was able to spend a lot of time with while they grew up. She frequently helped care for them when they were sick and went on vacations with them in better times. She fondly remembers the fun she had with them while at the beach or on a cruise ship.

Nancy will be remembered for her enduring strength, her graceful kindness, and the nurturing heart she shared with everyone around her. Her legacy of love lives in those who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Wayne Marshall Miller; her daughter Kelly Dowdy, from a previous marriage to the late Charles D. Dowdy; her granddaughter, Ryan Register (Peter) and her grandson, Marshall Tillman. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, and her older sister, Mary Alice Jones.

Memorial service will be Wednesday September 9, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta. Family will receive friends 1 hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
