

Robert Pierpont Taylor, M.D., 87, died of natural causes at his home on October 2, 2023. He was born in Atlanta, GA., on 17 June 1936 at the old Piedmont Hospital. He was predeceased by his father, Lucian Ira Taylor, and his mother, Lillian Pierpont (Taylor) Watkins; his son Daniel Pierpont Taylor; his brothers William Taylor and John Wager. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Daniel Taylor of Marietta; his daughter Lynne Brague (Cary) of Acworth, his son John Gordon Taylor (Lynn) of Marietta; Daughter in Law Amanda Taylor of Newnan; and his grandchildren Matthew, Ansley, Grant, Nicholas, Phoebe, and Emersyn; and his half-sister Nancy McDonald.
Bob was an Eagle Scout and a 1954 honor graduate of Marietta High School where he served as president of the BETA club and lettered in three sports. He attended Emory University and The Medical College of Georgia where he received his MD degree in 1961; interned at Macon hospital; and spent two years of general practice in Grantville, GA. He began an ophthalmology residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA. in 1964 where he was drafted into the U.S. Army Medical Corp in 1966 in a special physician draft serving at Fort Polk, LA., and at the 91st evacuation hospital, the first civilian casualty hospital at Tuy Hoa, S. Vietnam until 1968. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service, caring for so many refugees and orphans by flying to camps via medical helicopters.
After an honorable discharge, he returned to New Orleans to complete his residency as chief of ophthalmology at Charity Hospital. In 1969 Bob joined Dr. Lige DuBose in the practice of ophthalmology in Marietta, Ga., being board certified. During his thirty one years of practice Bob enjoyed playing golf, winning the Marietta Country Club senior men’s championship in 2006 and accomplishing three holes-in-one, spending many restful hours fishing with his good friend Dr. Judson Trippe; attending home football games at Marietta High with Judson and Mr. Bill Smith (the “three amigos”); doing his own yard work and home upkeep; establishing a large Lionel electric train layout; and carving Santas under the tutelage of friend Ron Ransom. Bob was the great,great,great grandson of James Lord Pierpont author of “Jingle Bells”.
He has two scientific articles published in the National Ophthalmology Journal and was a member of the AMA, Cobb County Medical Society, and Board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Bob was a faithful member of Marietta First Baptist Church, joining in the early 1950’s, and then serving for many years as a deacon. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at MFB with Rev. Brandon Owen officiating on Oct. 7th at 1pm, with a visitation Oct. 6th from 5-7pm at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home. The family will also greet friends and guests immediately following the service.
