Loafer lived almost his entire life in Marietta. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1947 where he played football for the mighty Blue Devils. After a twenty-five year career as residential real estate agent, he went to work for Lockheed Martin, because he had met the love of his life, Patricia Durrett Fowler, and felt he needed a steadier income. They married in 1980 and remained married for 29 loving and fulfilling years until Patricia’s death in April of 2009. All would agree that their marriage was very special because Loafer worshiped Pat, making her happy till the very end, he was her Prince. Loafer was an only child. When he married Pat, he adopted a large family (she had four sisters, two brothers). Pat had three children Dani Travis, John Travis and Mike Travis, who survived him. He became their surrogate father and loved and cared for them as though they were his own. He did the same for the grandchildren, (McKenzie Flournoy, Alex Travis, Jessica Travis, Jake Travis and Zach Travis). His dedication to Pat and his family is a true measure of his life and stands as a testament to his loving nature.
