Coila Swiger DeYoung

Coila Swiger DeYoung, 98, of Martinsville, died Saturday, August 21, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Big Bay, Michigan on April 14, 1912 to the late Lewis John Swiger and Josephine Albert Swiger.

She graduated from Lee High School, Grand Rapids Michigan, and attended Grand Rapids Technical College. She was a homemaker, a past president of the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Girl Scout Council where she served as the Executive Secretary. She was also a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church and past President of Women of the Church, a member of the Garden Study Club, and the Women’s Club of San Clemente, California.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George M. DeYoung, infant brother, Lewis DeForest Swiger, sister, Lorraine Yount and son-in-law, Dean Edward Brown.

Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis J. Brown of Huntington Beach, California, son-in-law and daughter, Colonel and Mrs. Richard D. (Anne M.) Weede, USMC (Ret) of Lexington, Virginia; five grandchildren, Michael DeYoung Brown, Christopher Scott Brown, and wife, Diana, Deirdre Anne Brown, Lt. Colonel Richard Hunt Weede, USMC (Ret) and wife, Tessi, and Lieutenant Colonel Hank DeYoung Weede, USMC; five great-grandchildren, Sara Anne Weede, Hunter Christine Weede, Christine Teah Brown, Chelsea Elyssa Marie Brown, Breena Ross Brown, and Laila Cohen Brown. The surviving family is forever grateful to the loving ladies, Ann, Debbie, Doris, Jeannette and Rachel, and others, who faithfully assisted Coila in living the last 11 years as she wished.

A visitation will be held Saturday, August 28, 2010 from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Homes, Martinsville Chapel.

A graveside service will follow at 11:30 A.M. at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville with the Rev. Kenneth Hughes officiating.
