

Edna Adkins Oakley, 88, of Figsboro Road in Martinsville, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was born in Henry County on December 9, 1923 to Grover Cleveland Adkins and Mary Leslie Draper Adkins. She was employed by Globman’s Department Store as a buyer and manager in the fine china and gift-ware department for more than 40 years. She later retired from Belk. She was a member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church where she was also a member of Sunday school and the WMU.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton D. Oakley; three sisters, Effie Jaine Coleman, Viola May Adams and Mildred Lee Thomasson; two brothers, Dover Cleveland Adkins and Wildon (Judge) Adkins and a son-in-law, Ronald Bowles.
Surviving are three daughters, Dianne Bowles of Martinsville, Bonnie Franklin and husband, Tim of Christiansburg, Dawn Vernon and husband, Ray of Bassett; one son, Carlton Dean Oakley and wife Lisa of Martinsville; five grandchildren, Mark Anthony Bowles, Brian Keith Bowles, Rebecca Ashley Franklin, Henry Carlton Franklin and Carlton James (C.J.) Vernon; two great-grandchildren, Sadie Grace Bowles and Lacy Belle Bowles; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Jamison and Ann Oakley; nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Lewis Harris officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Abbey.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at McKee-Stone Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
