

Eugene Godfrey Hardy, Sr., 89, of 25 Martin Park St, Axton, VA., died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Memorial Hospital Martinsville-Henry Co. He was born in Danville, on January 27, 1921 to the late Alfred and Gertrude Gans Hardy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was the first married Henry County resident to re-enlist for the Korean War.
He was in the All American 82nd Air borne Division during WWII and Korean Conflict as a paratrooper. During his service career, he parachuted at the Invasion of Normandy, and was on tour in the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic, and Europe Theater. He retired after more than twenty-five years of service as a truck driver for the City of Martinsville Public Works Department.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Morris Hardy.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane H. Remy of Wilmington, Delaware and Darlene Turner of Martinsville; one son Eugene Godfrey “Gene” Hardy, Jr., of Martinsville, one sister, Cora Lee Hardy; four grandchildren, Brad Harris, Ashley Hardy, Justin Hardy and Emily Hardy and one great grandchild, Emma Grace Hardy.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2010 at Collins-McKee-Stone Martinsville Chapel with Reverend Mike Carrow officiating. Interment will follow at Henry Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends 6-8p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010 in Collins-McKee-Stone Martinsville Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the donor’s choice in the memory of Mr. Hardy.
