Evelyn Henderson Chappell Norton

Evelyn Henderson Chappell Norton, 86, of Kings Grant Community of Martinsville, died Sept. 20, 2014. Born in Critz, VA July 5, 1928, Ms. Norton was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ronald A. Henderson, Sr., husband, William Pace Chappell, brothers R.A. Henderson, Jr. and Douglas T. Henderson, all of Martinsville, and grandson, Michael Christian Burton of Manteo, NC. She is survived by her husband Louis Guy Norton, Jr., brother and sister-in-law, J. Bailey and Dixie Henderson of Chesapeake, VA, two daughters, Dawn Chappell Shank (Randall) of Walkerton, VA, and Jennifer Deigh Hodges of Axton, two sons, Charles Wesley Chappell (Deb) of Roanoke, and William Henderson Chappell (Kim) of Nelson County, VA, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Norton was a graduate of Martinsville High School, received a B.A. from Mary Washington College, and an M. Ed. from Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught in Martinsville City Schools, Goochland County and Richmond County, VA schools. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher for the Chevis Horne class, as well as the W.M.U. She also sang in the Jubilate Choir. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and a past docent with Piedmont Arts. She instilled a love of the arts in her children and grandchildren and leaves them with many happy memories.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, Sept. 23 at First Baptist Church of Martinsville with John Fulcher officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM Monday, Sept. 22 at McKee Stone Funeral Home.
