Geoffrey Donald Thornton

Geoffrey Donald (Don) Thornton, of Collinsville, died at the age of 97, on May 27, 2013 at Memorial Hospital. Born June 23, 1915, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late James Stovall Thornton and the late Ida Carnice Young Thornton.

He served in the Army during WW II in Italy and North Africa, and upon his return he briefly worked as a mechanic. He then joined Fieldcrest Mills (Pillowtex), where he retired as the Production Control Manager in 1980 after 34 years of service. In his retirement he accomplished his dream to “see the world” by visiting 46 countries around the world.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Surviving are his nieces, Dorothy Joy Webster of Fieldale, VA, Connie Thornton Lauer of Lake Anna, VA, Amie Thornton Applerouth of Oak Park, CA, Patricia Wells of Hampton, VA; nephew, Cecil Thornton of Newport News, VA and several great-nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Roselawn Burial Park with military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPCA, 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, VA 24112.
