Gladys Vernon Young

She was born March 10, 1920, in Patrick County, Virginia to James W. and Carrie Ray Vernon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Caudis Allen Young, two sisters, Lucille Vernon Nowlin and Cathleen Vernon Pigg and two brothers, James Curtis Vernon and Kenneth Ray Vernon.

She retired from DuPont with 38 years of service and she worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross at Martinsville Memorial Hospital for 30 years.

She was a longtime member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Martinsville, where she was in the Lester Thore Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Alpha Omega Circle, as well as the Young at Heart Group and the Martinsville DuPont Credit Union Golden Club.

Surviving are a son Gerald Allen Young and his wife Julie of Springfield, Virginia and a sister Ruth Vernon Emerson of Patrick Springs, Virginia. She is also survived by two grandchildren Stephanie Renee Creasy of Centreville, Virginia and Jennifer Michelle Young of Alexandria, Virginia.

The funeral service will be at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home on Broad Street, Martinsville, VA at 2 pm on Monday, April 20, 2015. Pastor Steven Greer of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church will be officiating.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 1 to 2 pm at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville following the service.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 824 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, VA 24112.
