

Ivey Courtney Stone, 96, of Martinsville, died on Monday evening, November 30, 2015 at Kings Grant Retirement Community. She was born in Iredell County, NC on December 26, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Lina (Ivey) and Marshall H. Courtney of Charlotte, NC and the widow of State Senator William Francis Stone of Martinsville, VA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, William Marshall Courtney and Marcus Vincent Courtney, a sister, Claire Courtney Ashcraft, and a grandson, Howard Hillhouse Stone.
Mrs. Stone was educated in the public schools of Charlotte, NC. She was a graduate of Duke University, a military veteran who volunteered and served as a Navy WAVE communications officer at the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. during World War II, and a charter member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. She gave generously of her time, talents and energy to many local civic and charitable organizations, including The Patrick-Henry Tuberculosis Association, The Charity League, The Current Events Club, The Colonial Garden Club, The Garden Study Club, Forest Park Ladies Golf Association, Forest Park Country Club, Martinsville - Henry County Clean Community Commission, CONTACT telephone ministry, and The Patrick Henry College Educational Foundation, in many of which she served as a board member or in other leadership roles.
She is survived by three sons and their wives: William F. Stone, Jr. and wife Cathy of Martinsville, Charles M. Stone and wife Nancy of Whitefish, Montana, and Vincent C. Stone and wife Mary Ellen of Martinsville; four grandchildren: William F. Stone, III, Randolph Tyler Stone, Courtney Stone Fullerton, and Charles Sanford Stone, II; and six great-grandchildren, Sally Katherine Stone, Courtney Ellen Stone, Natalie Rebecca Stone, Ivey Eleanor Stone, Margaret Rose Fullerton, and Howard Stone Fullerton.
A funeral service will be on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Bradley Long, Pastor of that church, and the Reverend Paul Johnson, Chaplain of Kings Grant Retirement Community, officiating. A reception will follow after the service.
