He was born in Henry County, Virginia, October 25, 1926 to Hobert H. and Mary Hodge Donavant. He served in the Army and was retired from E. I. DuPont where he was an electrician for 40 years. He was a long-time member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church where he was a member of Sunday School and served on other various committees. He was a member of Dyer Store Ruritan Club and had served as a Boy Scout Leader, a member of Habitat for Humanity and was a volunteer for Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilda Cross Donavant; four sisters, Nellie Donavant, Nora Donavant, Erma D. Ray and Christine D. Honeycutt and two brothers, Hubert Donavant and Edgar Daniel Donavant.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan (Sue) Donavant of Collinsville; Jennifer Donavant Dorton and husband Mike of Martinsville; one son, James Patrick Donavant of Richmond; one sister, Linda D. Walker of Danville; one brother, Lewis Donavant of Kernersville,NC; five grandchildren, Jody Vaughan, James Donavant Jones, Joshua Donavant, Brittney D. Harrison and McClain Dorton; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 1:00 PM at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with Dr. Michael Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, beginning at 11:30 am prior to the funeral service at McKee-Stone Funeral Home and other times at the home.
