Larry Milton Turner, of the Figsboro Community, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home after a brief hospital stay at Wake Forest Baptist Health Center. Born on January 7, 1946, in Newport News, Virginia, he moved with his family to Henry County in 1954. He is the son of Dorothy Williams Turner and the late Jasper DeShazo Turner. His paternal grandparents were William Belcher Turner and wife, Kate Wingfield Turner, and his maternal grandparents were the late John William Williams and Lillie Stultz Williams.
He enjoyed playing football at John D. Bassett High School (1964) and later at Guilford College (1968). He spent over thirty years teaching and coaching at Martinsville High School and later McMichael High School in North Carolina. His final years in Virginia were spent as athletic director and served on the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Association. Upon retirement, he spent his remaining sixteen years volunteering for Grace Network, Safety Net, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and his church, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
He was deeply committed to his wife of fifty years, Carolyn Davis Turner, of Bassett. In addition to his 98 year old mother, Dorothy, and his wife Carolyn, Larry is also survived by his brother, Glenwood R. Turner and his sister-in-law Janice Mason Turner of Collinsville; daughter, Lara Turner Pendleton of Charlotte and her husband, James Russell “Rusty” Pendleton; son Jason Davis Turner of Reidsville and his wife Michelle Saunders Turner; three grandsons, Jarrod Nicholas Casper, Davis Thore Turner, and William Michael Turner, and a grand-daughter Sydney Grace Pendleton.
The family will receive friends at McKee Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 and will be officiated by Pastor Gil Lee. The eulogy will be presented by Terry Young. Interment will be private at the family cemetery in Penhook, Virginia.
