Obituary of Leonard Lee Craig
Leonard Lee Craig, born January 18, 1926, of Martinsville passed away peacefully on the morning of June 15, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Lee Craig and Ada Hollandsworth Craig; three brothers, Curtis Lee Craig, Richard Kenneth Craig and Percy H. Craig. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Marie Smith Craig; a son, Michael Lee Craig and wife, Brenda; a daughter, Susan Craig Midkiff and husband, Dickie, of Midlothian; two very special grandsons, Michael Adam Midkiff of Washington, D.C. and Matthew Craig Midkiff of Blacksburg; a brother, Bobby E. Craig and sister-in-law, Patsy Craig, of Martinsville. Leonard was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Martinsville where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Administrative Board Member, member of the Young At Hearts Fellowship Group, United Methodist Men’s Club and was a lifetime member and teacher of the Lester Thore Sunday school class. He was veteran of WWII, serving in the China, Burma, India Theater with the MARS Task Force that relieved the famous Merrill’s Marauders. He worked for E.I. DuPont Company for thirty-nine years as a supervisor and engineering specialist, continuing to maintain the heating and air-conditioning at his church, even during retirement. Leonard was extremely handy and was always able to find a way to fix broken items. He often built birdhouses for friends and family. Leonard’s favorite pastimes included spending time with his family, golfing and gardening. He had a beautiful garden and shared many of his delicious vegetables with family and neighbors. He loved nature and the outdoors as well as bluegrass music and flatfoot dancing. He had a great passion for classic cars and NASCAR, was an avid canasta player and took great pride in his grandsons, Michael and Matthew. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2pm on Monday, June 18th at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 2pm that same day with Pastor Tim Gearheart officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park with military honors presented by the Martinsville-Henry County Honor Guard.
