Obituary of Lois Ann Givens
Lois Ann Givens, 93, devoted wife and mother, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at the home of her son and family in Martinsville. She was born December 11, 1925 in Blacksburg, VA, to the late Harry E. Gray and Edith Brown Gray. She is survived by her husband of 71 years Curtis D. Givens; sons, Dr. Curtis Delp Givens, Jr. and wife Donna of Newport News, Grayson C. Givens and wife Yvonne of Martinsville; grandchildren, Austen Givens and wife Rachel of Clinton, NY, Chandler Givens of Baltimore, MD, Erin Givens of Martinsville, Miranda Gunn and husband Parker of Martinsville, and Clark Givens of Martinsville; great grandchildren, Serafina Givens and Augusta Givens of Clinton, NY; niece Kathleen Patterson and husband Jim of Mooresville, NC, nephew Richard Givens, Jr. and wife Barbara of Charlotte, NC. She was predeceased by her father and mother-in-law, Emmett E. Givens and Nannie Lou Givens of Martinsville; and her brother and sister-in-law Richard Givens, Sr. and Jean Givens of Mooresville, NC. After graduating from Blacksburg High School, Lois Ann attended Mary Washington College, where she sang in Glee Club and served as Treasurer of the Junior Class. She married Curtis after World War II, and they moved to Martinsville, where she would spend nearly her entire adult life. Mrs. Givens was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, where she served on the Bereavement committee and sang in the Chancel Choir for over 50 years. During her sons’ childhood through high school, she was a stay at home mom taking care of her family’s every need. When her sons were older, she took a position in merchandising at Tultex Corporation, acting as the manufacturer’s liaison with retailers J.C. Penny, K-mart, and Sears; a position she held for over sixteen years. Lois Ann enjoyed reading, cooking for her family, baking sourdough bread, working in the yard, and organizing photo albums. Her bright smile and contagious laughter always brought joy to family and to friends. A memorial service celebrating Lois Ann’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Martinsville with Pastor Keith Ritchie officiating; a reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Family members will attend a private burial ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery before the memorial service. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019 at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville. Memorial gifts may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 146 E.
